Strategic Advisory · Investments

Every company reaches moments where an important decision needs to be made. Sometimes that decision is about growth, bringing in investors or finding the right partner. Sometimes it simply requires taking the time to understand what is really happening before deciding what comes next.

That is where I enjoy working

After working with founders for more than twenty years, I’ve come to realise that the interesting part of a company is rarely found in the organisational chart, functional descriptions or a pitch deck.

What really defines a company is how people think together, how trust develops around a table and how a single, well-focused conversation can change the direction of a business. That’s why I enjoy spending time with founders when they are facing an important decision. Very often they already have most of the information they need; what is missing is simply the time to look at it from a different perspective.

My background is probably a little unusual. Alongside technology and entrepreneurship I’ve spent years as a musician, built businesses in the wellbeing space and trained as a therapist. Those experiences have shaped the way I work. They taught me to listen carefully, to recognise patterns, to appreciate different perspectives and to understand that organisations are ultimately human systems. I don’t separate strategy from people because, in my experience, the quality of one always influences the other.

How I Work

Every company has its own history, ambitions and culture, so I don't arrive with a fixed methodology. I prefer to understand the people first, explore the assumptions behind the challenge and help create enough clarity for the next decision to emerge naturally.

I've always been inspired by the Socratic dialogue. Asking the right question often changes the conversation, and a different conversation frequently opens the door to possibilities that were already there but simply hadn't been seen.

What Heliconia Does

Heliconia combines strategic advisory with an investment mindset. I work with founders during periods of growth, change and strategic decision making, and I selectively invest in companies where I believe I can contribute beyond capital.

I also enjoy working with entrepreneurs at a very early stage. Sometimes that means helping shape an idea, challenging assumptions, developing a business model or building an investment-ready business plan. When there is a strong alignment and I can contribute over the long term, I'm open to structuring part of my involvement through equity rather than traditional consulting fees.

About

I'm Maarten van Wijck.

I've spent most of my career building businesses, creating partnerships and helping organisations grow internationally. I've worked across technology, AI, music, digital platforms and entrepreneurship, but the common thread has always been the people behind those businesses.

I enjoy creating the space where founders can step back, think more clearly and explore opportunities from a fresh perspective. My role isn't to tell people what to do; it's to help them discover the path that fits their company, their ambitions and the people around them.
